Our textiles are 100% sustainable and 100% natural fibers and our wool is supreme quality Merino.

Merino is a breed of sheep that originated in Spain and offers the highest quality extra fine wool. Spain secured a prominent position in the world of wool as early as 1000 AD. Throughout the following centuries and by 1765 the Royal crown amassed the best flocks and holdings in both transient Merinos and the wool trade. The second most mountainous country in Europe, Spain’s vast mountain terrain provided the perfect topography for profitable sheep herding where in the mountain areas green pastures for grazing and clean water were abundant.

The mountain zone of Rioja was a primary location for the flocks to settle and graze in this verdant pastoral land.

Migration routes began in northern Spain and travelled all the way down south to sunny Andaluca. They were protected under the “Mesta”, which was established in Spain in 1273 almost eight centuries ago. The Mesta was a powerful association of migratory sheep owners. These migration routes remain today and often pass through vineyards and village streets as these ancestral rights often predated crops or roadways in these areas. To this day winery teams may grumble about the sheep trampling through their vineyards. Wool from these free roaming sheep migrating in verdant mountainous passageways was of supreme softness and quality.

The flocks were guided by literate sheep herders “pastores” educated in their community nocturnal schools, at a period in history when much of the population was illierate.
It was necessary for them to have the computation and writing skills to carry out important financial transactions as well as journaling of the long migratory passages with their herds.

THE BENEFITS OF QUALITY WOOL IN YOUR HOME

Wool has many unmatched qualities we forget in the modern era of fast fashion and convenience. Often heralded as the queen of natural fibers, wool has multiple attributes. It is a natural fiber, biodegradable, antimicrobial, temperature regulating to provide warmth or act as a cooling agent, flame retardant and more… It is good for you, your loved ones, your home, and the Earth.

Our limited edition wool pieces are handmade. Since it warms in cold weather and regulates body temperature in hot weather it can be enjoyed comfortably in all seasons. As true to grapes for a wine, the quality of the natural fiber is essential. However, how it is made and the skill of the craftsperson is equally important. Our workrooms are home to special “hand held” centenary looms that slowly create weaves that cannot be replicated. This tradition can be equated to the intrinsic qualities of a Rioja Gran Reserva wine in “quality, heritage, and pace”. These heirloom pieces are designed and made to be cherished for generations.
